GUEST POST
Hannah wants attention
by Cara Bristol
Are you drawn to certain animals? Beyond the cuteness of a puppy or a baby bunny (most baby animals are irresistibly cute), do certain animals catch your attention more than others?

Some people love horses, some are dog people. My biologist nephew loves snakes. His biologist wife is crazy about birds. Another nephew volunteers with the Jane Goodall Institute and works with mandrills.

My pet in Rescued by the Cyborg for Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2 is a cat (a kitten), which is one of my favorite animals, but there are several others I like a lot I could have written about. I think familiarity breeds affection. I’ve had a personal association with nearly all the animals on my shortlist of favorites:

Turtles. Although they’re reptiles, turtles have personalities! They recognize and greet their owners. I had a pet tortoise when I was a kid. Her name was Susie. The very first term paper I ever wrote was about turtles (I was in the fifth grade). My college boyfriend had a fish tank and I bought him a turtle for the tank. I named it Turtle T. Turtle (guess what the T stood for!). Here in Missouri we have a lot box turtles and snapping turtles, and I when I’m out walking, I keep an eye out for a sighting.

Ducks. I love watching them. Whenever I see a duck, I’m apt to say, “I like ducks.” My husband then says, “I know.” (I guess I say that a lot). I had a couple of pet ducks when I was a kid, too.

Squirrels! When I was 13 I went to the Grand Canyon and came home with pictures of squirrels. Natural wonder? What natural wonder? Look! A squirrel! I think the bushy-tailed little rodents are so cute and clever. I can watch them scamper from my office window (or see them ON my office winow). Holding and petting a squirrel is one of the items on my bucket list. I hope one day to go a “squirrel garden” (petting zoos) in Japan to fulfill this item on my list.

Cats. For the record, I Iike dogs, but I’m drawn to cats. I love their expressions, their playfulness, their intelligence, and their independence. My husband has an eye for wildlife. He can spot a deer or hawk from way off. I’m like that with cats. We’ll be driving down the street, and I’ll notice a cat in someone’s window. “Did you see that cat?” I’ll say. “What cat?” he’ll ask. I adopted my cat from a pet rescue shelter in 2003 over Thanksgiving.

What are your favorite animals?
Rescued by the Cyborg Excerpt

Guy pushed into his cabin. Next to his bags was the gift—a box tied with a big red bow. The carton was moving. And mewing. “Oh, Jessamine, what did you do?”

The box bumped into his foot. Atop the lid his niece had written: LIVE ANAMUL. OPEN IMED IMID SOON!

He ripped off the bow and peeled back the top. Inside, an angry, frightened kitten hissed. Jessamine’s cat had birthed a litter, and he recognized this baby by its gray coat, four white feet, and a blotch shaped like a star on its button nose.

Sighing, he reached into the carton.

The kitten growled and swiped its claws across his skin.

“Ow!” Guy yanked his hand back. The kitten leaped out and dove under the berth.

Great. Just great. How could his niece have done such a thing? She shouldn’t have boxed up a live animal—even if she did punch air holes in the carton. If she hadn’t contacted him and insisted he open the present, the kitten might have remained inside for quite a while.

In the corner of the container, he spotted a slip of paper, partially shredded. He unfolded it.

Dear Uncle Guy,

I know you are sad, and I want you to be happy. I am giving you one of Fluffy’s kittens so you won’t be lonely. I named her Mittzi becuz she has four wite white mittens. Pleez come home again, soon.

Jessamine
XOXO

His sister worried about him, but Carter, too, and now Jessamine? He hadn’t hidden his feelings well enough if his seven-year-old niece could pick up on them.

Everything Rornn tries appears to push Trysh further away – that is until they rescue a tiny, starving yipwag pup from an alien world.
