the promise of power - A Neophyte's Tale (Netherwalk 0.5) by C.K. Dawn

Abbey Thorne hears voices. Well, one voice repeating one word, over and over again. Soft and sweet with the promise of power, it calls to her. The twelve-year-old has no idea that the tender little word is actually a catalyst that serves to reveal a world hidden to most humans.

Description:

Publication Date: May, 2015

Abbey Thorne hears voices. Well, one voice repeating one word, over and over again. Soft and sweet with the promise of power, it calls to her. The twelve-year-old has no idea that the tender little word is actually a catalyst that serves to reveal a world hidden to most humans. Abbey has yet to discover that following the word’s call to its origin will change the course of her life forever.

Abbey and her mother don’t have much, and depending on the day, sometimes they don’t even have a roof over their heads. She wants more out of life than just wondering where her next meal will come from. So she shouldn’t be wasting her time daydreaming about going on a selfish quest… or should she? Does she have the strength to leave behind what little she has? Will she have the courage to break through the illusions surrounding her and lift the cloak of shadows?

GUEST POST
Why I Love Being Indie

In the fall of 2014 I had just published and was immersed into the massive and intimidating social media scene along with hundreds of thousands of other writers all wanting to be seen and heard. And then an author reached out to me in a tweet which included the hashtag IndieBooksBeSeen. My curiosity was piqued so I looked into it and found an unbelievable kinship like no other. It was incredible! A little while later I took part in a blog hop scavenger hunt with my fellow Indies where I was asked to describe what it’s like to be an Indie author. Here’s what I wrote:

It starts with the exhilarating yet horrifying click of the upload button. You send your novel, your baby, up to be approved, and then huzzah! You’re a published author. Now what? It’s a vast lonely cyber world out there and yes your novel may be made of fantastic magical star stuff, but there’s a whole universe out there. The bright shining stars with support teams the size of planets orbiting them seem to penetrate through the dust and star stuff with ease. But you’re an Indie, by definition alone you are independent, determined, and driven. So you persevere and carve out a little nook (pun intended) for yourself in the dark vacuum of cyber space. Slowly your little corner of the world opens up and you finally look around at all the other star stuff. You take in the entire view of it. The hundreds of thousands of like-minded Indies all around you. And then you really see it. The banding together, the formations of nebulae the size of galaxies, and you realize you’re not alone. You yourself are unique and so are they, but together you form something beautiful, something massive, something bright in the darkest reaches of space, and something that is HERE for all the world to see. That’s how I felt when I found #indiebooksbeseen. Instantly I was among friends sharing ideas, support, and knowledge all for the love of writing and joyfully wanting to share the characters and worlds we create. It was, and is incredible! So you see it’s true, indiebooksbeseen is more than just a hashtag, we are a movement, and we are family all composed of beautiful magical star stuff.

About the author:
Coffee lover, gamer girl, Sci-fi enthusiast, and overall crafty individual, CK Dawn graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in Interior Design and a minor in Architecture (I know, right?). Loving to be creative but feeling stifled by invoices, custom orders, and curtain patterns, she decided instead to follow her favorite philosophy: if you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life. So, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... she finally decided to pick one of the stories that had been bouncing around in her head and boom, Cloak of Shadows came to life.

CK lives with the love of her life John, his cat Scout, her cat Hagrid, their mutually adopted and socialized feral kitten Pepper (yes, cats have favorite humans. It's a thing), and their dog Diesel (aka Methane-- Please, don't make her explain).

She credits her mother for the strong independent woman she is, her father for her inner peace and beautiful outlook on life, and the summers of sweaty, manual labor on her grandparents' farm for her strong work ethic.

In writing, CK has truly found her bliss. Stay tuned, because there will be a lot more to come in her Netherwalker series. Seriously, things have only just begun.
