My  Review

Hunter Shea’s Sinister Entity is truly a worth reading!

Usually I choose what books I read and reviewed. The reason? I do not want to do anything I do not like, by obligation nor to write a bad review for a book that maybe I didn’t like but other probably does, because for me art cannot be classified, you'll like it or not. It's more honest to everybody. CCAM likes books “for girls” and YA and she had tried to find for me a horror book to review it. What a disappointment it was ... everything revolved around buckets of spilled blood and a violence without purpose so I could only go halfway and I said to her that something like this I cannot read. I'm not a guy who gets scared easily, that was not the problem, but the book had nothing to offer me besides a useless massacre, and the writer’s style did not seem to be something to merit. Out of respect for author and for the tour organizer, I’ll not say the book title. As for the review, I thought what the hell I was going to write. So after the first refusal and considering that I’m right to read only the books I wanted, CCAM comes with a second proposal. I decided to give her a second chance and ... Surprise!

This time I hit the jackpot!

As I was saying, Hunter Shea’s Sinister Entity is a worth reading novel.

It’s a horror book in which the thrill and excitement are the basic coordinates rather the senseless brutality of the descriptions. How well realized (really?) the ones who read books or watch movies of this genre, if from the beginning to the end it is a totally massacre, this will brutalize their senses and they become a mere spectator in a slaughterhouse. You will not have the same impression with this book because it is well dosed and built by the author. Hunter Shea will speculate more the reader’s emotions as masters of the genre did, avoiding the gross and facile descriptions. Of course, every writer wants to reinvent a style, but not everything that is new is necessarily better. Hence the satisfaction that I had reading the Hunter Shea’s book that represents a return to the old values of Horror style: suspense and excitement.

Sinister Entity is a novel that deals with the paranormal. Yes, it is a book with ghosts, but not like those dumb movies that annoys the viewer through the stupidity of the characters' actions or comedies like Ghostbusters.

The subject is exciting, the action starts pretty quickly, and its development is well managed by the author. It has a linear development, but a good pace and a gradually accrual of tension. The explanations are given at the right time and the suspense hovers throughout the story. And that's a good thing because the suspense is the secret ingredient of a quality horror story and not the butcher’s knife! The resolution will surprise you in a pleasant way.

The characters are perfectly shaped, plausible, without unnecessary exaggerations and you'll love from the beginning the main characters, the heroes of the story. You will find the characters from the afterlife  interesting and if I can say ... truly "vivid"! I will not mention anything about the topic because the book’s synopsis says it pretty much, anyway more than enough, considering that about a book of this kind if you reveal too much, you risk ruining the effect of mystery and thus destroy the reader’s pleasure. It's like peeking at the end of a detective story to find who the killer is, or having some "benefactors" friends that would want to tell you about a movie they have seen before you. Since it is a new published book (April 2nd), you benefit from the absence of those who scatter spoilers everywhere.

The pleasure of reading this book made me wish to read the other novels of Hunter Shea, and about this one I warmly recommend it to you. And what is more interesting, even if I have mentioned the word horror, is that this book can be read with no problem also by those who do not like in particularly this genre. They will not be disappointed and I guarantee to them that they will not get gruesome stuffs and atrocities, but an entertaining novel full of mystery.

Happy and scary reading!

I received the book for review as part of Book Tour - Thank you

Excerpt:

The floorboards creaked behind her, a slight groan of wood protesting the weight of a single, heavy footstep.

Three more breaths. Her heart rate slowed to a steady rhythm.
Another creak, this time to her right, near the breakfront.
Jessica smiled and she felt the tension release its grip from her shoulders.
Breathe in, hold, breathe out.
Something hard and small smacked into the glass top of the coffee table.
Breathe in, hold, breathe out.
The sound of glass under stress, spider cracks crunching their way across the surface of the table.
Now!
Jessica turned quickly and shouted “Boo!”

The coffee table top exploded in a shower of glass pebbles as she faced the empty darkness behind her. Bits of glass bounced harmlessly off her leather jacket. A picture frame flew from the fireplace mantle and crashed into the opposite wall. All of the kitchen chairs slid out from under the table at once, one of them falling completely backwards. Jessica turned back towards the living room in time to see the blinds on the front window part as if someone ran a finger from top to bottom. Upstairs, it sounded as if a brawl had broken out. The ceiling fan shook under the pounding of footsteps and falling objects.

The house was alive and it was not happy.
